Blogging for the sake of blogging…

Well… another fun filled day of consumerism has come to an end.
We decided that since it was raining, we’d head over to the big mall
for some money-spending. We came upon some awesome deals on
Calphalon at Marshall Field’s that we couldn’t pass up. Nice
pans… I love the Calpholon that we already have, and the new stuff
will be a welcome addition. Clare had a good time riding
the carosel at the mall, and we took a nice ride out in the country
afterwards that ended up in Kalamazoo. Kzoo in the fall is such a
wonderful experience. I miss that town a lot, but home is in
Eastown, a home I’ve really grown to love, too. Hope this message
finds everyone in good health and good spirits and I must remind
everyone as the time approaches… please remember to vote.

Al Green, the rain, and everything going wrong…

Well… Al Green was AWESOME. I think we scored some of the best seats in the house. Holly even got a long stem red rose from the man himself. It was a great night of great old school soul.

Getting to that point was another thing entirely. We forgot the tickets. I called the State Theatre box office and they said it was no problem, they could reprint them. Whew… so we didn’t have to return to GR to get the tickets, which would have made us almost miss the show. The folks at the State are awesome and deserve huge kudos for dealing with our lack of attention.

It was raining, construction held us up. We didn’t get into KZoo until about 6:45. which only gave us an hour to eat (Food Dance, yeah!), get over to the State (in the rain with no umbrellas), get our tickets reprinted, and get seated. We made it… just barely. Char got a major blister on her foot from walking over to the State. There were a number of rude people at the show and a lot of drama from people who spent $70 each for tickets and ended up with people from the back in front of them dancing. It didn’t bother me much, but some other folks were quite irritated.

After the show, we went over to Kraftbrau for some beers. Char and I had their Blackberry Pilsner, which was EXCELLENT (I have a weakness for fruit beers). A band called “Oh My God” was playing there and they weren’t half bad to listen to (neither of us were anywhere near drunk). After the beers, we went over to Water Street for a nightcap of coffee and dessert, then headed home. Needless to say, the end of the evening was MUCH more enjoyable than the beginning.

Last night was good. We were joined at Casa del Dokey by Senor Mateo and had a whooping good time eating spaghetti and drinking zeus-knows-what. I feel fine this morning, so it must not have been too bad. Now it’s off to pick up the Clarester from her grandparents’. Cya ya’ll l8r.

Crappy wines tonight & some good ones the other night.

Bad wines tonight. Whew… both were we stinkers in both of our opinions.

-Sebastiani Pinot Noir - Tastes like campfire with bits of rancid vanilla.

-Thirsty Lizard Shiraz - Ass with hints dry moss. It smells like a rotten possum (Char says it smells like rubbing alcohol). I think the Lizard dehydrated and died. Hey… but what do you expect for $7? Moral of the story… want good Shiraz? Buy Penfolds… end of story.

The other night, we had Warner’s Cabernet Franc, which is an EXCELLENT wine. I think the other one was Cuvee de St Michael (a red table wine from France), which was also most excellent. Michigan wines (such as the Warner Carbernet Franc) aren’t as edgy and acidic as California wines and there’s a tendancy toward subdued oak flavors rather than the “full campfire in your mouth” approach that many California wine makers seem to be infatuated with. We tend to like French wines better than California because of this quality as well.

New Music (and some old)

Things on the juke this week ::

-Tom Waits : Real Gone… this is one fine album. Highly recommended

-Fancy Thermos : Music Songs… from mostly members of Domestic Problems (and Sam). It’s growing on me more and more.

-Buddha Bar V… OK, I just put this on tonight, but it’s still really good chill music that goes quite well with a glass of cognac.

-Tears for Fears : Everybody Loves a Happy Ending… a guy at work (hi Sieber) put this in the collection this week. It’s surprisingly wonderful poppy, listenable, happy music.

On and On

How-dee! Just some quick tasting notes on a couple of wines we had last night. The first was Warner Vineyard’s Carbernet Sauvignon. It was very good, smooth and medium bodied with only hints of berries and oak. The second was St Julian’s Chancellor, which is fast becoming a favourite around here. It is a very large red with excellent body, strong berry flavor and subdued, but still plenty apparant oak flavor. We have also partaken in St Julian’s Reserve sparkling wine, which is a Chardonnay in the champagne style. Wonderfully dry, it is definitely one of the more drinkable sparkling wines that I’ve had in recent years.
