‘Fits and spurts’ seems to be the going theme of my life right now, so
without further ado, here comes the latest in worthless diatribe from
yours truly. As many who read this thing are aware, Char and I
spent a wonderful couple of weeks chillin’ in Colorado with Beeko and
his SO, Jackie. We had a killer time. Photos are in the
gallery, so head on over there, if you haven’t seen them already, after
finishing up here.
This week has been the week from hell at work. It seems the whole
world is falling apart and, of course, it’s all in the client/server
realm. The CIO/IT Director from the company that we are
contracted to for IT services said that it was probably “solar
flares”. Seems responsible to me. I don’t think I’ve run
into this many problems in one week in a looong time. I’m tired
of problems. I got about 2 hours of sleep last night and am
running on about 10 cups of coffee today.
Wow, have we picked up a lot of music lately. I haven’t even
began to wade through it all, but a recurring pattern is
happening. I’m listening to a lot of underground hiphop from a
guy who calls himself “Born Lyrics”, a new Jon Spencer effort called
“Heavy Trash” has gone on heavy rotation, and I’ve listened to the new
Mike Doughty (of Soul Coughing fame) disc more times that I’d be
willing to admit considering the amount of other stuff I have being
left unlistened to.
Born Lyrics has a wonderful sense of the funk. The insane use of
deep funk cuts alone makes it a joy to listen to… not to mention that
the guy is probably one of the more talented wordsmiths out
there. Very enjoyable. Heavy Trash is Jon Spencer’s latest
endevour, proving that he can play psychedelic rockabilly better than
those who do it for a living… way to go Jon… put out an album as a
side project that puts folks like Horton Heat, who have been doing it
for years, to shame! Char likes this disc too.
Mike Doughty’s latest is either very excellent or I’m just totally
enthralled by hearing that voice with something fresh because I’ve
listened to the Soul Coughing albums so much that I’ve memorized every
word and chord progression. I’m not really sure, but either way,
I’m really enjoying it. Soul Coughing purists will say that it’s
watered down, which is true, while those that just like good music will
say it’s an ok disc with a lot of catchy tunes. It’s certainly
listenable beginning to end. I don’t find myself skipping any
tracks.
Stupid Beeko and his stupid Panjabi MC… yes… I bought that one
too. I know… there’s a freakin’ Jay-Z track! Ugh!
But it’s totally infectious music. I can’t get the rhythms out of
my head, though I try. No worries though. I’m sure it will
be replaced in my head soon enough…
Well… that’s about it for me. One last thing before I go…
while in CO, I picked up a bottle of Absente (yes… Absente, not
Absinthe, but close). It is really excellent stuff. I
highly recommend it to anyone who likes anise (and alcohol, of
course). This stuff is completely different than Jager, but think
of it as a very delicate version, not for the faint of heart though…
110 proof (I water it down considerably… probably two parts cold
water to one part Absente).
Take it easy ya’ll.
