A grand experiment - Homemade Limoncello

Current Mood:Chillin emoticon Chillin

Last night on the way home from seeing Wall-E (it was great by the way), we stopped at Meijer and I picked up a 1.75L bottle of Gilbey’s Vodka, a half dozen large lemons, and an Italian glass swing-top jar.  The skins from those lemons are now living in jar with the vodka in my basement.  In 3 weeks, I’ll write more on how the experiment has gone.  We’ll be adding simple syrup to the mix to make the liqueur-of-summer and then probably aging some more.  I’ve planned to bottle it in old Redstone Meadery bottles.

For the future, I’m going to pick up a microplane grater, which many say works a lot better than the method I used, which was a stardard bar peeler, which also took forever.

Best little winery in Colorado

wine-bottles-250.jpgYesterday, Char, Beeko and I went to the Balistreri winery in Denver.  They have a very unique process that results in very uniquely wonderful wines.  The vintner is focused on making wine “the old fashioned way”; free of sulfites, container-crushed and fermented, and barrel-aged to perfection.  There are no stainless steel tanks to be found at this winery.

And the taste?  Every wine we had, barring one that the hostess warned us about, was excellent, with a few wines bordering on the best I’ve ever had.  Even the wine that we were warned about was just simply not that great.  It wasn’t awful.  Without the fining agents, sulfites, and other additives, the fruit is allowed to really shine.  Balistreri also does no blends (every wine is vineyard-specific), so the taste of each region, each year, is front and center.

The pure depth of the tasting was something to behold with over twenty wines on the docket.  It was certainly a marathon, with grapes, crackers, and cheese in between.

Aside from the fact that they have great wines, the vintner’s wife, who was the hostess, was the most enjoyable part of the experience.  Her candor and willingness to share in the joy of their winemaking was second to none.  This is a family-run, and family-loved experience and it shows.  Talking to several of the regular customers that were present when we were there, it’s apparent that the Balistreri’s bring their customers in for that experience.

The room itself is small and nice, and they have a small garden where they serve small plates.  It seemed very nice, but we were there for winetasting and wine buying and had already eaten, so maybe next time.

It’s been almost a decade since Char and I started winetasting and I can say without a doubt that this winery provided the most memorable experience we’ve had to date.  If you are in the Denver area and find yourself wanting a wine tour, I strongly recommend that you make some time for them.

The summer fiz fix

Our friend Beeko has been growing a mint garden at home. He’s managed to cultivate several varieties and as such, last night became a “create an interesting drink with mint” night. As a result of last evening’s festivities, I’ve developed a trio of new summer recipes for cocktails involving mint and soda.

Orange Mint Fiz

3-4 fresh Kentucky Mint leaves
5-6 fresh Pineapple Mint leaves
3 parts Orangcello
2 parts Vanilla Vodka
2 parts soda or sparkling water

Muddle the mint in the bottom of the glass along with part of the vodka. Let sit for 4-5 minutes. Add liquor, ice, and soda. Stir. Enjoy.

Choco-mint Fiz

4-5 fresh Kentucky Mint leaves
3 parts clear Creme de Cacao
2 parts Vanilla vodka
2 parts soda or sparkling water

Muddle the mint in the bottom of the glass along with part of the vodka. Let sit for 4-5 minutes. Add liquor, ice, and soda. Stir. Enjoy.

Strawberry Lemon-mint Fiz

4-5 fresh Kentucky Mint leaves
5-6 fresh Pineapple Mint leaves.
4-5 fresh strawberries
3 parts Lemoncello
2 parts vodka
2 parts soda or sparkling water

Muddle the mint and strawberries in the bottom of the glass with part of the vodka. Let sit for 4-5 minutes. Add liquor, ice, and soda. Stir well. Enjoy. In this drink, fresh basil can be substituted for the mint.

Sangrias excelentes

We’ve cooked up a couple of high octane Sangria recipes in the last few days in celebration of summer. Here are the recipes.

Red Sangria:

2 bottles of red wine (preferably dry)
1/4 cup passion fruit vodka
1/2 cup brandy/cognac
3-4 cups of fruit (we used raspberries, cherries, peaches, bananas, strawberries, grapes)
1/2 bottle of POM Pomegranate/Blueberry juice
1/2 cup sugar

Put fruit, vodka, and brandy in a pitcher and soak for a couple of hours, add wine, sugar, and juice. Refrigerate overnight. Add soda to taste if you want to tame it down a bit.

White Sangria:

2 bottles of demi-sec white wine
1/2 cup vodka
1/4 cup brandy/cognac
3-4 cups of fruit (we used apples, peaches, pineapple, grapes)

Same directions as above, except no sugar in this one (the wine is sweet enough).

Obviously, there are millions of Sangria recipes out there. These are just two that I’ve made in the past couple of days. I’m probably going to play with it some more this summer as building various recipes of this versatile summer drink seems like a lot of fun. Stay tuned.

Quirky Lurkey!

Current Mood:Mischievous emoticon Mischievous

quirkyquirkyquirkyquirkyquirkyI know it’s been a while since I’ve posted, and I’ll explain about that in another post, but we’ve been tagged to do a Meme by pal Big Binder.  Seeing as how Brad would probably never share in his quirkiness…I shall not break the Meme Love and share in my quirkiness.  Apparently you have to share 6 unspectacular quirks…although I honestly don’t know how quirks could be unspectacular.  So…here goes:

  1. I have to pick on Brad’s face - literally.  If he has a zit he hasn’t noticed, I have to pop it.  If he has a stray beard hair, I yank it.  I particularly can’t handly wiley eye brow hairs.  I too pick at my own face, but it doesn’t bother me.  I’m also that mom that picks at her kid’s face.  I don’t know why I do it, I just can’t leave things alone.  I also secretly want to pick at other people’s faces if I notice they have a zit.  I show restraint and don’t do it, but most of the time I spend talking with them I can’t stop from staring at their zit!
  2. I think I might be OCD (overly obsessive compulsive disorder).  If we leave the house for a weekend I check the locks on all the doors at least 3 times.  I have to check at least twice that lights are on, and that nothing else is on or running.  When we go to a hotel, I tear apart the room making sure we have everything we came with, and walk through it at least 3 times.
  3. I refuse to have company over if my house is a mess.  It’s something I think I got from my mom - sorry mom, I love you!  I run through a routine of vaccuming, dusting, sweeping, mopping, doing the dishes, and cleaning the bathroom if we have a playdate, our family comes over, or our friends come.  I’ve gotten better about this and have cut back on somethings (but only for people I’m really close to, and understand my lack of cleaning time).
  4. I love cleaning, when I’m in the mood for it & have time for it.  If I start cleaning an area, I can’t stop until it’s done.  I’ve even sent Brad & Clare out to dinner without me because I’ve not been done cleaning the downstairs.  I think part of this also goes along with #3 & #2.  I will also clean to get out of doing other things.  When I was in college I was known to have the cleanest dorm room during finals!
  5. I love to do yard work.  There’s something about a finely pruned bush in the back yard that makes me feel all sunshiney good!
  6. I like driving.  Well, if I’m too tired I don’t like it.  For the most part though, I don’t mind it - especially since it’s my car we take most of the time.

Well, there you have it.  Some of my quirky lurkiness all out there for the readers to see.  I think I’m going to tag Adventure Mom.  I’d love to hear some of her quirks!  Anyone else that wants to join is of course asked to just leave a comment link, so I can follow-up.

Wedding Photos : Part Two

The second installment of wedding photos are up in the Gallery now.  Some of my favorites are in this batch, including this one. I still have my shoes (and wear them once in a while… they are getting pretty worn).

Red Robin - Veggie Stylie

OK. The adverts have gotten me along with reading one of the blogs that I read that Red Robin has Boca patties and will make any of their burgers as veggie-friendly. So, after many many months of shunning them as “just another wasted space on a burger joint”, we gave it a shot.

It was certainly an interesting night. Apparently Wednesday is kids night (free frisbees and they play movies). That was cool. Clare was completely calm and behaved. She actually ate her dinner in a timely manner. We were informed that there is some kind of salmonella scare going on with tomatoes right now, so we were tomato-less. And they didn’t have Boca patties tonight, but they have gardenburger patties as well. Score. Veggie burgers with choice!

Beside all of that, the burgers were absolutely stellar. Since the Eastown Grille closed up, I haven’t found a place with customizable veggie burgers anywhere in town. This more than fits the bill, their toppings are tasty and fresh and the service is quick and friendly.

The fries, while good enough, would probably be rather bland without the seasoned salt that they provide on the table. The fries are big steak-cut jobs and the portion is actually reasonable (you don’t have half of Idaho on your plate like some places).

I had a BBQ burger that had thin-cut onion rings, cheddar and BBQ sauce on it and Char has a Teriyaki Burger that had Pineapple and Teriyaki sauce. Both were well received and we both agreed that this is the place for a good veggie burger. Can’t wait to try it with Boca next time. Clare like the place due to a “classic” bowling video game they had in their waiting area that she played on the way out (score : 166).

I’m in the process of posting the first of three or four installments of wedding photos from our wedding.  These are never-before-seen-as-digital photos that I’m in the process of scanning/cropping and uploading.  I’m hopefully going to get to some other photos I have around of our lives prior to become fixtures of eastown.  Follow the gallery link above or click here to get right there.

Tumblr’n : photoblogging trial

I’ve signed up for a social service called Tumblr that let’s you post various junk by e-mailing to an interface. I’ve integrated this into eastowners at the Tumblr’n link above. Check it out for various random bits. The cool thing is that this gives me a way to get photos from my phone directly posted online with a quick caption. I think it’s nifty.
