Things I Love Thursday - Digsby

Things I Love ThursdayThings I Love ThursdayThings I Love ThursdayThings I Love ThursdayToday for Things I Love Thursday I wanted to talk about one of the tools I use to help me to keep tabs on all of the social networking I do.  I am a social butterfly both in real life and in the online world, and like in real life I need some sort of way to help me from getting cluttered in my online life.  Brad introduced me to Digsby a few months ago when I started Tweeting on Twitter, and I have been in love ever since.

Like most people I know most of us are on either Facebook or Myspace (or both if you’re like me), they have a few e-mail addresses, they IM, and now I’ve been finding more of you on Twitter.  I end up having so many tabs open in my browser it’s ridiculous!  With Digsby you can have them all neatly in a little window on the side of your screen, and it tells me when I have a new message on Facebook,  Myspace, or in my e-mail.  It also tells me when someone I’m following on Twitter Tweets something, rather than me sitting on the website all day long refreshing my browser.  I find it has saved me a lot of time in not “checking” my e-mail so often, and from having a messy desktop/internet browser.  Rather than me blathering on about it’s many benefits, click on over here to read about all of the great features.  It’s a simple download, and the window pops up everytime I start up my computer letting me know all of the online love I’ve recieved!

Here’s a sample screenshot of what it looks like.  I highly reccommend downloading it to anyone that is involved in the social network frenzy these days…I know I Love it.

The Grand Penguin Experiment Pt 2

ubuntulogo1.jpgTwo months in, the great experiment where I replaced my primary computing platform with Ubuntu is going somewhat well, with very blatant missing items.  Most basic things have been replaced and I must admit that I prefer Gnome, as I have it set up, to Windows.  What I don’t like is the mish-mash of what feel like half-finished applications that are used to get it all going.

First, the list of definitely missing items.  Most of these are specific pieces of software that I have not found a direct replacement for.  Some things  are purely bitching, and some are what might be considered a real beef.

  1. Digsby is not available for Linux yet.  This is a new, but super cool social-networking app.  Without it, I’ve lost track of Facebook, MySpace, and for the most part IM because I keep forgetting to start Pidgin, which I don’t want to auto-start because I’m not always on the internet.
  2. Applications not in the repo are still too difficult to install.  Try installing Flock on Ubuntu for an example. There’s no standard method, and therefor, getting software that doesn’t make the repo is tough.  Managing third party repos is possible, but requires technical know-how and not all apps are in ubuntu-compatible form in repos.
  3. No Photoshop.  Gimp is close, but it’s not a replacement.  No other app I’ve found even comes close.  I have to keep a Windows VM on my laptop just for Photoshop and Digsby, but it is a pain to start.
  4. Adobe Air is still not updated to 1.1.  A lot of cool multi-platform Twitter apps are built on Air. The older version leaves certain features, like saving passwords, not possible.  This simply illustrates the fact that software vendors just don’t see a free desktop as viable.
  5. Audio is, for all purposes, broken in it’s default config.  I had to follow a bunch of online instructions to get flash and thick apps to share the audio without making me restart Firefox in order to play music in an app after being on something like YouTube.  This is simply unacceptable.  Something as basic to modern computing as audio should be seamless.  On my desktop, it took some time and effort to get the spdif turned on.  However, I will say that it works better than the Windows drivers on the same box.
  6. Suspend doesn’t work.  Why offer a feature if it doesn’t work?  The wlan card never comes back… basically making suspending the laptop worthless.
  7. No free office package is as good MS Office 2007.  Say what you will about Microsoft, but they’ve been at it longer.  Their apps are good, solid, and feature-packed.  For basic word processing and spreadsheeting, the free alternatives work fine, but I don’t think I’d recommend them for business power users.  There’s a difference between “usable” and “mostly satisfying”.  IMHO Microsoft doesn’t have much to worry about yet.
  8. An update killed X. Imagine my horror when X would not start after updating.  I was away from home when it happened without access to the internet (yes… I didn’t reboot before I left home), so troubleshooting the rather cryptic error presented by the gui was impossible.  When I got home, I found that apparently the permissions on one particular directory got messed up. Easily fixed, but not something I’d put on someone not technically inclined.  An update should never do that.

Free Movies - Can it be?

Current Mood:Martini Mood emoticon Martini Mood

disneydisneydisneyTonight I was going through the blogs I read, and found on the blog Freebies 4 Mom that Disney shows movies for free on their website.  I am so amazed by this I have to blog about it, and post it on all of my other social network sites.  You can watch it in a teeny tiny screen, or you can make it full screen; it’s pretty good quality for being streamed off the internet.  Right now Peter Pan is playing through Friday, and rumor has it that it’s the new version of Peter Pan next week.  Head over to Disney.go.com to check it out.  You only have to watch a few ad’s, and then the movie comes on.  While you’re there you can also click on the “Wonderful World of Disney” down on the left to see what movies are playing this week on the Disney Channel.  Enjoy!

Bottom of My Game (an exercise in writing once again)

Current Mood:F%@k It! emoticon F%@k It!

It’s been a while since I wrote anything meaningful. This is my first attempt in a long time to put together words in a way that evoke some kind of emotion other than pity on me for being such a bad writer. This is something I started a while ago… the theme of which I sort of picked out of mid-air… certainly not autobiographical or anything.

It might turn into something else at some point, but for now, I think it’s not too horrible. Not sure of a title, but perhaps “Supernova Gone Dark” is apt.

So here it is… no meter, no specific rhyme scheme. Could turn itself into song or a short story pretty well, I think.

Rolled out of bed, popped the cap off of a warm bottle of cheap-ass beer
Fridge has been broken since the days when it mattered more
Three more beers and then a quick drag on a half-burnt cigarette
That’s all I need and maybe I’ll make it through this goddamn day

It’s noon, gas station food boxes the urge for something harder than beer
Drag my sorry ass to the line, searching for a job or a handout or just someone to hear
Anything will do, anything that helps me get by and makes this mess a little more clear

Is there a spot in this place for a thirty watt sun?
Bright as a fizzling star can be
Happy as this poor boy can see
Is there a place in this town for a thirty watt sun?

Fear Not!

I have not left you blogging world.  I was away for the weekend enjoying some family time at the in-law’s down in SW Michigan.  For Christmas my in-laws decided they didn’t want a present from us, instead they wanted our help in running a garage sale.  Since we couldn’t make it down for the Friday sale we helped out on Saturday.  Friday night was full of laughter, as we sat around the dining room drinking beer with Brad’s brother & his wife.  We started making fun of my new favorite YouTube video “I like Turtles”.  Everytime I watch it I can’t help but chuckle, and if I watch it with someone new it makes me laugh even harder.

On Saturday I helped set up the sale, and I took my spot in the back corner of the garage with my Sister-in-law Karyn.  It was nice to get to sit and chat with her in between the slow pace of customers, as we don’t get to see each other that often, and while we’re at the in-laws our kiddo’s are swept away by their Buscia (it’s polish for grandma) leaving us free for conversation.  After cleaning up the sale we hung out awaiting Brad’s birthday dinner.  Whenever it’s one of us “kids” birthday’s Brad’s parents like to make a special dinner for us of our liking, and this year Brad wanted some taco’s.  Brad’s dad doesn’t make just any taco’s ya see!  For the meat eater’s in the family he mixes up some ground beef and seasonings and then fries the been into the tortilla shell in some oil.  They aren’t the healthiest things…but man are they good.  After their done you open the crispy fried shell up throw some cheese in there and some of this mexican salady type stuff (it has lettuce, tomatoes, green onions, and green chili’s from what I can tell) and man oh man is it delish!  For us in the vegetarian realm he made the same type of taco but with faux meat and refried beans (without the beans it would fall apart in the frying).  They also made some enchilada’s with the same stuff inside, and it was equally yummy!  Just typing about it makes me want to eat more of them, and I just ate 4 for lunch.  To work off dinner though I did make an effort and go outside with Clare to toss around our huge kite frisbee we bought out in CO.

Sunday came, and we went firework shopping down in Indiana…cause in MI we can’t get any of the fun stuff.  My parent’s are turning 50 this year and celebrating with a big bash, and we’re bringing the pyrotechnic’s to celebrate!  I can’t wait for that weekend.  We hung around for a bit, and then headed home.  Just another weekend around the Eastowner’s  that’s come and gone with little excitement.

A Happy Ending To Something Terrible

Happy Friday all.  It’s been another terrible week here in the salt mines, but things don’t really change much.  I’m either bored out of my skull or being harassed by the throngs of good-intentioned idiots who all seem interesting in nothing more than trying to force very expensive processes and systems into being free.  The biggest frustration with my job is the fact the the following conversation happens at least 2-3 times a week.

Them : “You need to reduce costs in area x”

Us : “Cool.  We can eliminate component 7 from area x because only .0000034% use it and we can save 20%”

Them : “That is COMPLETELY unacceptable. We cannot REDUCE SERVICES.  Oh… and by the way, while I’m thinking about it, we need to add 4 more components to area x while we’re talking about it.  So… when can I have the 20% cost savings?”

Us (as blood pressure hits an all time high) : *gasp*

Them : “Thanks for understanding” (then they leave)

So today, I’ve been working on web servers and listening to music.  I do enjoy doing technical work, when I can get it.  I haven’t been bothered by the usual financial and strategy stuff and can do what I think I do best, bit-fiddle.  Kicking web servers is kind of a hobby of mine and this one is a very complex little job.  Next week, I’m scheduled to begin working on phase two of a coding project that I started a couple of months ago.  I’m geeked about that.  I’m not the greatest code-chunker in the world, but I do enjoy it.

The list has gotten pretty short lately, sadly.  I long for the days of huge, multi-stage, million dollar IT projects that had hard deadlines that were bordering on insane.  At least then, I was busy and didn’t have time to take breaks and work on blog entries.  Speaking of blogs, in the past few weeks we’ve gained a number of readers and we appreciate that.  We’ll be trying to be a little more regular with the posting around here.

So happy Friday everyone.  I will be stopping and getting beer on the way out of town tonight and tipping one in your honor tonight.  Thanks for reading.

Subjects for upcoming blogs : Limoncello, How An Atheist Was Tricked Into Enjoying A Christian Band (and later pointed in the right direction by a kindred soul on Twitter), & the unbelievable twists and turns in the preparation of jello shots.

Things I Love Thursday - Rash Free Shaving Lotion

Current Mood:Jammin’ emoticon Jammin’

Things I Love ThursdayThings I Love ThursdayThings I Love ThursdayMy friend in bloginess, and in real life, Jill over at the Diaper Diaries has started a Carnival where every week people post about the things they love in life.  I’ve decided to jump on the “blog wagon” (cause we’re not in a band here people), with my new found love of blogging again.

This week I wanted to share with you my love for Coochy, Pure Romance’s answer to a rash free shave.  Now, before you click the big X button up there, it’s not anything naughty!  When I became a consultant for Pure Romance I figured I should try some of their bath stuff, as I had not used it before.  Coochy is my razor’s (and my) new best friend.  You apply a dime size amount to your legs, lather it up, and shave.  Be prepared for the best shave of your life.  The shaving lotion is formulated to relax the hair folicle for a clean shave, leaving your legs and underarms smooth and your bikini area rash and bump free.  Yes, rash free - no more itch ladies…well unless you get lazy like I did on our return CO trip and didn’t shave for a few days, then I can’t guarantee anything.  Ahem. It also has a moisturizing agent in it, so your legs will be left not only smooth, but feeling sliky - that’s my hubby’s favoite part (well that and the fact that the stubble is gone).

Another added bonus is that it can be used as an awesome conditioner, especially during these summer months with all the swimming you do.  I used it in my daughter’s hair when it was longer, because she has horrible bed head, and her hair was tangle free after her bath, and made for easier brushing between baths.  I’ve tried it in my own hair, and it leaves it silkier and slightly bouncier than any other conditioner I’ve tried.

If you’re interested in purchasing Coochy you can got to my Pure Romance website.  A 4oz bottle will cost you $10.50 and will last you about 3 months, an 8oz bottle will cost you $16.50 and will last you about 6 months.  If you’re interested in earning some Coochy for free you can host a party (in home or by doing a catelog party), as all hostesses earn 10% of the sales in free product.  I do parties in most of the lower half of Michigan’s Lower Pennisula, however if you are located else where contact our coorporate office to link up with a great consultant in your area.

Mark Kistler

For those of you born in the late 70’s or in the 80’s (or those with kids born then) do you rember seeing on PBS Mark Kistler’s Imagination Station drawing lessons?  I remember watching it with my brother’s - Larry in particular, as he liked to draw.  Mark’s little mini shows taught you how to draw in 3-D using perspective, and shading, as well as some other things - all things I was not all too familiar with before going to his Art Camp with Clare.  I am not an artist by any stretch of the imagination - most of the time Clare tells me my drawings don’t look like their supposed to, but I always give it my best shot.  I can however say though, that after attending Mark Kistler’s Art Camp with Clare, I think I now have some artistic skillz I didn’t even know existed!

Apparently Mark was on PBS with 65 episodes of his Imagination Station series, he also did a few other drawing series on TV, and he has also written some “How to Draw” books, as well as done some DVD’s.  His philosophy is one of the best one’s I’ve read in a while it simply says:  “learning how to draw in 3-D builds a child’s critical thinking skills while nourishing self-esteem. His positive messages on self-image, goal setting, dream questing, environmental awareness and the power of reading have inspired millions of children to discover their awesome individual potential.”  Mark is also extremely high energy, and keeps kids (even adults) excited about drawing and being creative while teaching you how to do some pretty cool drawings.  If you’d like to learn more about Mark please click on the link above, he also does what sound like some awesome school assemblies.

So, you might be wondering why I’m blogging about a summer art camp I did with Clare…why it was so special and blogworthy…was I PBS star struck, kinda, but it was even cooler than that!  Earlier this Spring a flier came home from Clare’s school about Mark Kistler’s Summer Art Camp, I looked at it, and suddenly it hit me who he was.  I was super excited because I remembered him from my younger years.  What was even cooler, was that they were taping this art camp to be aired on PBS later this year (with any luck).  Mark and his team paired up with Farris State University to tape all 5 sessions of his art camp for the entire week he were here, and every student and parent was to be a part of his live in-studio audience!  Parents were required to stay for the younger 5-7 year old session, but after staying this year I think I might stay every year I sign Clare up.  At least until she kicks me out due to embarassment.  It was that much fun, and they encourage you to participate with your kids!  Which might I say is key in having a good relationship with your children, because too many parents are dropping their kids off at school or summer camp and not taking a part in their kid’s life because they want to be rid of them.  Granted, some days I find myself in this rut, but most days I’m right there along side Clare…having just as much fun as she is.  I’ll step off my soap box now.

Now, Clare & I are not early risers, but we had to be the week we had art camp.  If you were not there on time, you couldn’t get into the class because they were recording it.  I told Clare it’s practice for school!  Each session was an hour long, and if your kids were older they could do more than one session, but for Clare 1 hour was about all she could take.  Being in TV land for an almost 6 year old is boring, (well other than the fact that she knew she’d see herself on TV eventually) how many times do we need to rehearse the opening to this afterall?  She didn’t understand “cut”, “edit that”, or why we couldn’t leave until they were done shooting what they wanted - no matter how over our time limit we were.  I thought it was kinda cool, but then again, I know what’s going on.  Art camp isn’t normally like this, according to one of the mom helpers, it’s just this summer was special because of the video taping.  The price wasn’t too bad either, at $89 for the week (they also give you discounts for adding classes, and offer scholarships for families in need).  Many of you are gasping, I heard you.  The nice thing is, Mark, his team, the video crew, and everyone helping out with this was doing this for free.  That’s right free.  They are donating the shows to PBS, and then all of the money raised through the fee’s to come to the camp, buying a T-shirt (gotta have that), and any donations they recieve go towards them getting the distribution rights to put this on televisions accross the world.  I think that’s a pretty sweet deal.

Now, if your still reading this…I applaud you!  I tend to ramble, especially when talking about something as monumentous as this.  Come on, we’re going to be on PBS!  If you click the continue link there are some pictures I took of Clare’s and of my own artwork.  Clare has become more inspired since going to Art Camp, and is drawing things she wasn’t before - like marshmallows.  We drew a few fun marshmallow pics, and since then she’s been in a marshmallow mood.  Now we aren’t Picasso or anything, but I think these represent our best works.  Enjoy the art!
