Great Things To Do With Vodka

Current Mood:Mischievous emoticon Mischievous

Episode 1

Smirnoff White Grape

whitegrape.JPGOur good friends at Smirnoff recently released a white grape flavored vodka that has become one of my favorite flavors so far. There seems to be some infatuation with the non-sweet flavored vodkas at the eastowners’. Thankfully, our escapades are numerous, frequent and prolific, so we have lots of opportunity to sample a wide range.

The thing about subtle flavors is that you need something equally as subtle to pair with it. The white grape flavor could easily be overwhelmed by just about any strong flavor, so picking a mixer becomes somewhat of an exercise in experimentation and patience.

In our case, we had a bottle of Black Star Farms pear dessert wine, which proved to make a really excellent martini.

The recipe:

3 parts Smirnoff White Grape Vodka
2 parts Pear Dessert Wine (or sweet Ice Wine)
Couple of drops of lemon juice

In a shaker with ice, combine the vodka and wine, shake well and strain into glass.  Add lemon juice, garnish with lemon peel (if you have it).

The white grape vodka also goes very well with club soda and I imagine that it would pair well with white cranberry juice, though I haven’t tried this one yet.  Next episode : Three Olives Berry.

Sleepy Saturday

Current Mood:Tired or Sleepy emoticon Tired or Sleepy

nappingSo, last night I unexpectedly went out with my gal pal Gabby.  She had a rough day at work, and didn’t want to deal with her kids…and I always enjoy an excuse to go out.  So, she picked me up and we went downtown to The Bulls Head.  Our local fav Fancy Thermos was playing.  We’ve become those drunk girls that show up on occassion, and get shout outs during songs saying hello.  We both went out with the thought of only having a few drinks, hanging out, and chatting about what’s been going on since we last hung out.  Things somehow ended up a little crazy around the 4th cosmopolitan for me, and apparently we did 3 shots with the band.  Sam from the band drove us home, and this morning I was still slightly drunk.  Apparently I couldn’t handle my lemon drop shots.  So, I’ve spent the day dozing on the couch and doing much of nothing.  Although I wish I hadn’t had a head ache…I guess that’s what happens when you party hard like I have a tendancy of doing.

NYE 2007 : Jello Shot & Pudding Shot Recipes

Current Mood:Getting Loaded emoticon Getting Loaded

jello.jpgFirst up, the jello shots. We made several flavors this year, with some new things. The permeation of flavoured vodkas have really helped out with making drinks (and jello shots) more interesting without the use of additional sugary liqueurs.

I’ll skip the generalized instructions for making Jello Shots. There are tons of places on the web that tell you how. Google is your friend.

Here’s the break-down of what we made this year:

  • Lime-Pear : Lime Jello with Absolut Pears
  • Cherry-Vanilla : Cherry Jello with Vanilla Vodka
  • Orange-Vanilla : Orange Jello with Vanilla Vodka
    • Did not come out as well as expected. Will add vanilla extract next time
  • Berry Blue-Citrus : Berry Blue Jello with Citrus Vodka
  • The “Yellow Meanie” : Pineapple Jello with Melon Vodka and Coconut Vodka
    • Needed Banana… will add 99 Bananas next time
  • Tropical : Tropical Fusion Jello with Melon Vodka
    • They have some additionl “fusion” flavors that will make interesting Jello shots.

As for the pudding shots, well… here’s our initial story, based on one time trying them. They were soupy and didn’t set up right except in a very cold freezer. I’m going to work on them a bit more to get everything right, but here’s what I did. You might also play with the proportions and get a better result.

We got large boxes of instant pudding. I put the alcohol in the freezer to ensure that it was cold. After mixing, the mixture was returned to the freezer for 15 minutes to get it to cool down again. Then I added a small tub of Cool Whip and folded in, then went after it with a whisk when it didn’t “fold in” because the mixture was more like soup than pudding.

Recipe 1 (Black Forest Pudding Shots) :

  • Chocolate Pudding (large box)
  • 1 Cup cold milk
  • 1 Cup Black Cherry Vodka
  • 1 Cup Irish Cream
  • 1 small tub of Cool Whip

Recipe 2 (Mocha Java Pudding Shots) :

  • Chocolate Pudding (large box)
  • 1 3/4 Cups cold milk
  • 1 1/4 Cups Double Espresso Vodka
  • 1 small tub of Cool Whip

Recipe 3 (Raspberry Cheesecake Pudding Shots) :

  • Cheesecake Pudding (large box, or two small boxes)
  • 1 1/2 Cups cold milk
  • 1 1/4 Cups Framboise liqueur (or Chambord)
  • 1/4 Cup Grand Marnier
  • 1 small tub of Cool Whip

They were all exceptionally tasty, but a spoon was definitely required. They set up fine in the deep freeze, but I don’t think our friend’s freezer was as cold. They went soupy before the end of the night. I’m going to continue with small boxes to try to get the proportions correct (and still have a little kick)… perhaps some gelatin added to the mix will help set it up. I’m also going to try the non-instant stuff as well.

100_2342.JPG

The weekend seemed to fly by in our house.  I have no clue where it went to.  Friday night we went out on a Family Date (as Clare put it) to a Japanese/Chinese buffet.  It’s pretty reasonable, and the food is good….and they have a decent sushi buffet!  That’s my favorite, they also hava a hibachi grill…I have yet to try that, maybe next time.  The name of said buffet is Ming Ten, they are located in the Celebration Cinema parking lot above the Melting Pot.  Clare loves it because after dinner they have an ice cream bar.  Afterwards it was a trip to Meijer to finish grocery shopping, and Brad wanted to buy a few things.

On Saturday the day kinda slipped away from us.  Clare played happily around the house, as I tidied up, cruised the web, and watched some tv.  Then her & Brad grilled up some Boca Burgers for dinner.  Clare was sent to bed, and Brad & I decided on cocktails & a movie.  During the movie I got a text from a friend that was up the street at Billy’s Lounge listening to the fine tunes of Domestic Problems.  We have been LONG time fans of this band, and I think it’s the first band Brad & I followed around the state to various bars.  I’ve seen these guys probably close to 1,000 times (probably quite literally) and the shows are ALWAYS good.  I even have a drum head hanging on my wall from the band circa 2001 - signed by all the members, and it was from my last show at WMU that I had planned with SET (Student Entertainment Team).  I even have a poster with the original band members in basketball uniforms with a show date at WMU.  I tried desperately to find a babysitter, but alas it was a bust.  I asked Brad if he wouldn’t mind me going up the street to meet our friend…and I wasn’t drinking that much so I wanted to take the camera.  Well, the drinks were flowing freely at Billy’s…as usual, because I went into the bar and asked for a double Vodka & Tonic.  The bartender misspoured, and accidently made 2 doubles of my drink so I got 2 drinks for $3.50….my lucky night!  I found Brian, and the band started playing.  It was amazing, it reminded me of my lost years in Club Soda with my friends seeing them.  It was a good time, I wish Brad would have been able to come too…I’m so very lucky to have him.

There are pictures and video’s in the gallery for those that are big fans too!  Some of the video’s in the gallery are a little bumpy, the first ones are bumpy from me holding my camera above my head to get video and pictures and getting bumped by fellow dancers.  The later ones are bumpy from no other excuse than I had too much to drink.  It was an awesome show though, and I’m so grateful that my hubby let me loose on a late night chance to go see Domestic Problems.  I can still hear the songs in my head.

Sunday was spent recovering from too little sleep, and too much to drink.  Then we were off to one of Clare’s friend’s birthday party.  It was all girls, and they had fun running around the Birthday Girl’s backyard….playing duck duck goose and red light-green light.  They each got their own bowl with their names on them for their ice cream sunday’s, and that was followed by cake.  They all had lots of fun, and I think the Birthday Girl probably crashed from all the running, giggling, and sugar….as I know that’s what Clare did!  When I came home I made dinner, with a little help from Brad.  We made an awesome stir fry with steamed broccoli on the side.  Clare even raved about it!  I blissfully fell asleep on the couch very early in the evening, an d was woken to Brad telling me to go to bed…I was snoring a little loudly I guess.  :)  And today, being Monday, we are all back to the grind of daily life.  I wish it were weekends for like a month!

Dates Really Do Count

Current Mood:Cool emoticon Cool & Lovey emoticon Lovey

date nightLast night for the first time in about a month Brad & I were able to get out for a much needed Date Night.  I know I’ve blogged about these before, but let me tell you why they are so important.  We started doing these regularly about a year ago, and it has helped us out in more ways than we can count.  I know it sounds cheesy…Date Night…but seriously it’s one thing we forgot how to do after embarking on marriage life and the decision to have a child.  We were so busy thinking about jobs, parenthood, and jumping through the hoops of life that we forgot about US…and what we like to do together.  It’s something that I think every couple should do, and it should be an institution!  We get so wrapped up in every day life that we forget about the things that drew us to this other person that we chose to commited our lives to.  So I urge anyone in a long term relationship to make sure that they fit a Date Night into their schedules on a regular basis.

Last night we decided to head out to Bar Louie in Woodland Mall.  They have yummy out of the ordinary bar food, and a happy hour we were unaware of….meaning martini’s for pretty cheap, and that’s what we’re all about!  I think they were about $5 each, regularly probably around $7.50.  I had a few Peartini’s along with the Blackened Fish Po’ Boy.  Brad had a variety of martini’s including the Peartini, and the VooDoo along with the Shrimp Po’ Boy.  We also shared their absolutely wonderful Salted Pretzels.  There isn’t much special about these, other than they are soft pretzles sticks (easy for sharing and dipping) and they come with queso, yellow mustard, and honey mustard for dipping.  We stuffed ourselves to the gills, and decided to see if there was a movie playing of interest at the new cheap 2nd run theater at the mall.  There wasn’t much in our time slot, and nothing that we wanted to see.  So, we headed to Meijer.

We actually had an agenda for going to Meijer this time.  When we went camping with our parents a few weeks ago for the Wine Festival, Brad’s Dad had purchased a table top propane grill for a pretty reasonable price.  He had said that he had gotten it at Meijer for about $25…Brad thought that it’d be a great alternative for us instead of buying a full grill for a much higher price.  Being Demi-vegetarians (we eat fish/shrimp…and that’s the only type of meat we eat) we have been wanting to grill our vegies, Boca Burgers, Smart Dogs, and Shrimp Kabobs for years now!  So, for a grand total of just over $30 we purchased a table top grill & a mini propane tank to go with it.  I think we’re going to do some grilling this weekend before the nice weather ends!  We also picked up some Jones Soda that was on sale (one of Brad’s fav’s), and some Strawberry Kiwi flavored Vodka from Pinnacle on a whim…hey, we are still working on the impulse buying - at least this time it was a relatively cheap impulse buy!  We also picked up some frozen lemonade for mixing and to drink on these somewhat warm early Fall days.

We were actually home relatively early this Date Night.  While it was somewhat short, it was nice.  I just enjoy spending time with Brad - alone - without having to take someone to the bathroom as soon as our food arrives, listening to “Hey, did you know” or “I have a question” every 5.8 seconds.  We love our daughter, but she drives us CRAZY sometimes!  Other than dealing with retarded people in the parking lot of the mall (a fine lady ignored the 3-way stop, laughing her way as she turned in front of me…as with most malls-ALL incoming traffic has the right of way), and trying to find a parking spot on a Friday night (we finally found one, and then the girls were parked the wrong way making them go the wrong way down the one way parking lot lanes).  Ah well.  Funny enough, we ended our date by falling asleep on the couch around 10:30pm.  I guess that’s what happens when you’re old!  :)

This morning/early afternoon has been relatively quiet around the Eastowner’s house.  We made brunch, Vegetarian style, with eggs, toast, and Morningstar Fake Sausage Links.  Clare of course ate tons of food for her growing body, and Brad & I enjoyed our Michigan Maple Coffee from Shuil with our food.  This afternoon we will be heading up the street for Eastown’s Street Fest.  Every year they close down the street and offer up live music on 2-3 stages, and venders up and down the street selling their wears.  If time permits & we have the gumption to go…I read in the paper this morning that their’s a Marching Band Competetion up in Rockford.  I doubt we’ll go, but it might be a nice end to our already groovin’ day.

Short post

Current Mood:Loopy emoticon Loopy

OK.  So many of you know that I enjoy imbibing in that which the yeast makes.  As part of my general liking for all things bar-based, I read a lot of various things regarding the subject.  Yes… fair readers, I also read the counterpoint and have yet to find an argument other than my stomach screaming at me that’s compelling enough to make me quit.  That’s for another post, though.

So here’s the funniest thing I’ve read today. It’s from the good folks at Modern Drunkard, who I sporadically read.  They sport some very good (and funny) fiction from time to time.

We bought some Papaya liqueur tonight for mixing with the watermelon vodka.  I’ll post results as soon as I get back to slinging drinks in the kitchen.  cya l8r.

If you’ve been paying attention, then you’ve already read about Char’s blog about Friday evening; dinner at Roses, followed by finding our cheap-as-hell vodka up on Alpine, the Eastown Hookah Lounge, with a final hurray at The Intersection with North Mississippi All-Stars. It was a rockin’ good time. I’ve posted some blurry phone pics in the gallery for your enjoyment.

The hookah really dropped my blood pressure a lot. I’m seriously considering this as a therapeutic sort of deal, but only every once in a while. The shisha has some tobacco in it (far less baddies than cigarettes, but enough to still be a concern). For most all of Saturday, I was really relaxed though. It felt good to be chill for a little bit.

IMG00161.jpg

So on to a quick review of the vodka. We picked up the elusive, bottom-of-the-crap-pile Burnett’s, in Watermelon, Coconut, and Grape (yes… glorius grape kool aid flavor). The grape was workable when mixed up with Sprite… the good news here is that while it is still pretty sweet, the vodka cuts the sicky sweet of the Sprite, so that’s a good thing. It really tastes like one of those purple freeze pops… it’s kinda crazy. The grape tastes a lot better than it smells.
The coconut flavor was pretty useful mixed with tropical juice and creme de cacao. I added a little amaretto for that almost complete Almond Joy taste. Add a little soda and now it’s fizzy for ya. It has a little bite to it, but it’s not the worst liquor I’ve ever had. It’s no Grey Goose or even Effen, but it’s still pretty ok… cheaper than Smirnoff and arguably just as good (or bad depending on what you’re after).

I’m not quite sure what to do with the watermelon. I tried a watermelon martini (trying hard to cover up the funkiness of the bottom-shelf swill). It didn’t work out so well. I’ll have to try harder… perhaps some melon liqueur is what’s needed to make it really snap. We’ll see. I didn’t have any at the time, so we’ll have to wait until next time.

IMG00154.jpg

The North Mississippi All-Stars show was fantastic. They are one of my favourite bands around and play rotten-to-the-core electric blues that just oozes history and is mixed with a fair amount of funk and jazz. Luther is a simply amazing guitarist. Chris Chew is probably the hardest working bassman in the business. He’s also completely amazing. The big thing about these folks is that they are all highly talented folks who play very very well together.

At one point, I went up front. If anyone was paying attention, they would have seen a 30 year old, overweight pony-tailed dude standing there with his mouth half open staring in amazement. Yes… they were that good. One of my favourite shows of late… hands down. I highly recommend seeing them if you get the chance.

For the most part, the rest of the weekend has been pretty chill. My folks lost power, so Clare’s trip down south was delayed until today. Char and I delivered her into the capable hands of the parents, relieving us for a couple of days. We stopped by Harbor Freight and bought some tarps and other junk we needed around the house. We’re planning on converting our back porch into a temporary storage space for the office crap and need to keep the rain off.

After that, we headed to Home Depot to pick up some other junk (and use the gift cards we had lying about). Now… as is usual, we are chilling, watching some TV before bed. In the morning, the ratrace begins again.

The Much Needed Date Night & Good Times

Current Mood:Eat Drink Smiley emoticon Eat Drink Smiley & Happy emoticon Happy & Lovey emoticon Lovey

IMG00068.jpgLast night we booked our babysitter for a much needed date night.  It’s actually been some time since we’ve been able to have a night out as we’ve had a lot going on this summer.  We left home wondering what to do for dinner, I made mention of Roses on Reeds Lake in East Grand Rapids.  Brad said there was no way we’d get in, as it’s always busy….not to mention on a Friday night.  Apparently we got there at a good time because we were seated with no problem.  We started out the night with a pitcher of sangria…..YUM!  For an appetizer we had the Cheese of the Day which was a baked bri served with toasted cranberry walnut bread, apple slices, grapes, and quince (which is like a jelly spread).  It was super yummy and a great way to start out a meal.  Because I went with a small plate for dinner I had a Baby Spinach Salad which had sun-dried cherries, red onion, gorgonzola, tosted pine nuts & balsamic vinaigrette.  And my Small Plate was Sesame Seared Ahi Tuna with ginger-soy glazed edamame, pearl onions & cashews, with sriracha & sweet soy around the plate.  I WISH we had taken a picture of it before I started eating, however I was so eager to try it I dug in with an eager palate.  It was wonderful fabulous unbelievably tasty!  Brad has a picture of my polished plate on his phone….I’m sure it’ll make it in his blog later this afternoon.  I got a head start blogging this AM because I was woken up at 6:30am by our darling daughter.  I dozed for a while, but then I was startled awake again to help put “planting pants” on Barbie at 7:30am.

BurnettsAnyway, back to my review of the evening.  We’ve been on the look out for Burnett’s flavored Vodka lately, and it’s hard to find around town as it’s WAY bottom shelf stuff.  However, we heard rumor of a great new liquor store up on Alpine just North of the Best Buy & York Creek Apt.’s (our old home sweet home).  They of course had the Burnett’s and much more!  We picked up Coconut, Grape, & Watermelon for our weekend consumption.  It was kinda funny, the lady was like “Having a party?”  I said, ”No… we just like to drink.”

HookahWe got in the car and decided to head back into Eastown to try our local Hookah Lounge.  We went to one out in AZ with Larry & Meghan and that was lots of fun, and it’s VERY relaxing.  We ordered up 2 pineapple-strawberry smoothies and a hookah with raspberry flavored goodness.  Once again Brad took photos on his phone, I’m sure they’ll be up.  We were obviously the oldest people in the room, not that it’s a problem for us…..but we were definitely the people we stared at a decade ago ( or at least I stared at ).  We got in contact with a friend that was downtown at a show, and decided to join the party after our hookah was finished.

NMAS After some smokin’ we got in the car and headed downtown to The Intersection to see The North Mississippi All Stars with some of the Geek friends.  The show was pretty good I must say…..I don’t like all of their music, but most of it is pretty good…especially their newer stuff.  They are though one of Brad’s favorite band, and for a chance to let him see them I would go and enjoy the company of our drunk annoying friends and have a few drinks myself.  We stayed until the end, and it made me want to come home to watch Back Snake Moan.  We didn’t watch it last night, but I foresee it in our future movie watchings.  It was a night of randomness for us, but it was oh so enjoyed by me.  I miss being able to wander around town on a whim doing what we do best…..finding interesting things to do.  Maybe once things settle down this Fall we’ll be able to get back into do some things for us again.

Lazy Day

Current Mood:Mischievous emoticon Mischievous

It’s a lazy Saturday afternoon in Eastown.  It’s warm, but not too hot outside, but we are enjoying the comfort of AC and generally hiding from our usually fiscally irresponsible ways.  I have some episodes of Braniac Season 4 to finish watching and have been doing that while the others are upstairs.

Brainiac is a British show and as such has limited availability in this country.  G4 carried the first three seasons, but season four has yet to show up (and they have started airing season 5 in Britain recently).

Lately, there haven’t been many purchases of new music, so I don’t have much to talk about.  I’ve been listening to the “back catalog” in an effort to reduce “the Best Buy Bill”.  Some of the things that I’ve been really digging lately are The Zutons, The Bees (Octopus), and Joan as Police Woman (who is apparently from rock-cum-classical outfit Antony and The Johnsons).

There still remains many things to do around here, but there’s some monetary reorganization that must be completed before additional investment in the Watson infrastructure will be feasible.  That’s just like I guess.  I think we’re going to try to clear out some surplus around here and perhaps we can obtain t he funds for our little projects through that.

Lately, I’ve switched my drinking habits from dark liquors (rum, whiskey and such) to vodka.  Being economical about it has been one of my main goals.  While the Grey Goose is some fine, smooth vodka, it gets a bit expensive.  What I’ve found is that many of the flavored vodkas mix well with Club Soda, are relatively low in calories, and don’t taste bad at all.  This includes vodkas from Smirnoff, Burnett’s and Absolut.

There is also the added benefit of relatively low incidence of hangover after a night of imbibing.  As this thing goes on, I’ll write more about the individual flavors, though at this point, I have to say that the Black Cherry Smirnoff is probably one of my favourite when mixed with soda.

Back from the east

Current Mood:Sleepblogging emoticon Sleepblogging

This weekend was spent attending the wedding of my wife’s brother, Larry and his new wife Meghan. They are certainly a happy couple and are now headed back to their domicile in Phoenix. It’s quite a long way to travel to get married, but since most of both of their families are here, it is certainly understandable and made it much simpler to attend.

The wedding afforded Clare some interesting new experiences. Staying in a hotel, riding in a limo, and a sip of champagne at the reception I think are probably the top three. It was a long night for all; including listening to my wife babble incoherently about who-knows-what as we got ready for slumber. Just smile and nod… that’s all the DD can do; especially when it’s an open bar. :)

The food at the reception was excellent, the room was nice, and Clare had an unbelievable time dancing the night away. There are some videos up in the gallery. Pictures of the events are also there for your perusal.

While there we found a place that carried one of the Burnett’s vodkas recommended by our friend Gabby. I was really really impressed at how a very inexpensive vodka (Burnett’s is definitely “bottom shelf” at $8.50/fifth) easily out-classed mid-priced Smirnoff. It was noticeably smoother and had no harsh after-notes. It’s certainly no Grey Goose, but if you’re looking for a vodka to stand in for Smirnoff, give Burnett’s a try; you probably won’t be disappointed.

Now it’s Sunday night and we’re chilling out watching some teevee. Well… Char is snoring on the couch and I’m surfing and watching PBS. It’s exciting stuff.
