A different kind of morning

Current Mood:Bored emoticon Bored

sunriseThings have been kinda slow paced around here since being sick Easter weekened.  The flu that I had basically knocked me out for about a week, so this past weekend I was kept busy almost all of Saturday cleaning house.  I wanted to completely sanitize the house to get rid of these germs, and all last week I just wasn’t quite feeling good enough to get there.  Now that we feel better, and THANKFULLY Clare didn’t get it, I feel like we’re getting back into somewhat normal - if there really is a normal.  On Sunday we kinda just took a day to relax, and do much of nothing.

This week is flying by without me knowing where it’s going.  Last night we met with a tax preparer to get our taxes done.  We’ve typically done them ourselves, but this year with my Pure Romance business we wanted to have someone do them so that way we are sure we claim the proper things that can be claimed with having an in-home business.  I am hoping for a big return - and then comes the thought of what to do with it.  We’ll probably pay down some credit cards, and save some of it for our summer vacation.  Tonight we have conferences with Clare’s teacher, so with any luck Clare will have had a good marking period.

So, you’re probably wondering why this morning is different.  Well, for the first time Clare is actually at school in the morning.  This was a big test for us, as we are not morning people - her and I.   She had to be to school at 8:05 this morning, which meant I had to wake her up at 7am.  I guess this is test for next year when she’s in 1st grade.  I guess I should explain why she had school this morning, ya see they split the 1/2 days between the AM and PM classes.  So, for this first part of the year whenever they had a 1/2 day we didn’t have school, and now for the last part of the school year whenever they have a 1/2 day we go to school in the morning.  Clare wasn’t too hep on the change, but I think that’s because she’s used to playing and hanging out in the morning, and today we didn’t have any time for that.  Tomorrow will be the same schedule for us, and then it’s Spring Break time.

This year for Spring Break we decided to actually go somewhere for a few days, so we booked a 3 day weekend up at the Double JJ Ranch.  They have a huge indoor water park, and some other things around the property like a petting zoo and what not.  It’s mainly for Clare’s entertainment, so I hope that it’ll be fun.  I think it’ll be nice just to get away for a few days.  Then next week Clare is going to my parents for a few days, and even though I’ll be home alone I’ll still be working.  Yep, I get to paint my office.  It’ll be nice to get my workspace back again.

So, what are you doing on your Spring Break, or what have you already done?

Feeling Not so Wordless Today

Current Mood:Ecstatic emoticon Ecstatic

oh helloSo, I would normally be doing my Wordless Wednesday post today, but I feel like breaking from the realm of norm to blog about something else - my sanity - if there is such a thing!  I’ve been posting alot about my Wish List this past week in all the things we’ve been working on around here, and as I looked at a copy of it I printed off this morning I can actually say we’ve crossed some things off of it.  It’s a miracle, but we’ve actually accomplished something around here, and the end result is me getting a little bit more of my sanity back.

Number 1 is done.  The office is now Clare’s room.  It’s been patched, painted, and all cleaned up to look like the pink aisle in Toys R Us at home.  Literally, it looks like you could be in a mock room in a store fit for a princess.

Number 2 is done.  Last week & weekend I spent a few days going through the toys.  I think the garbage bag total to Good Will is 3 by the time I sorted through it all.  You’d think 3 full bags is a lot - she still has a lot in her room.  I bought some super cute soft side bins at Target (they are pink & purple of course).  There are some small ones & big onese for the larger amounts of toys.  Now all of the tea party/food/kitchen stuff is in one bin, all of the doll house/Dora castle stuff is in one bin, all of the Barbie stuff is in one bin, all of the Littlest Pet Shop stuff is in one bin, etc. as I think you’ve got the idea.  It took me most of Saturday to sort through the crapt that was in her old room, as things just were everywhere.  I was very proud of my little pack rat though as she willingly put some things in the Good Will bag herself.  I think the new rule will be that when something new comes into the house, something old will be going out.  She has been so blessed with presents from our families growing up, but after this major overhaul I am ready to say that I want to stick to the bear minimum.  When she gets too many things, she has too many choices, and it results in me hearing “I’m Bored”.

Number 3 will be happening this weekend, as Brad is bugging me to pick colors.  I’ll get there - I’m just in break mode after finally finishing up Clare’s room.

Number 4 is pretty much done.  I started this a while back, I just need to go through our closet one more time to make sure I have everything.  Then it’ll be loading up the car and getting everything to Good Will!

Number 8 has actually been worked on.  Brad sold a bunch of stuff, and used it to buy his new keyboard/piano, a guitar for both him & Clare, some cd’s that he’s been longing for, and some other stuff.  He’s since taken a break from the world of E-bay, as it really is work.  I’m kinda glad, because I was getting tired of going to the post office every day with large packages that I had to rangle in by myself.  This project will begin again soon, as when I put the office back together there will be more things to get rid of.

I think number 1 & 2 have helped the most though.  Clare now plays happily up in her room with all of her toys for hours now, leaving me to do my own thing without much bugging.  Every night she is to clean up her room, putting everything back in the bins I’ve determined to be used for certain things.  She now has all of her toys in one place, and doesn’t really have to look for things.  I’ve even noticed in the 5 days that she’s been in her new room I have not heard once “I’m bored”.  I hope that I haven’t jinxed myself by typing that, but it’s been nice.  I know some of you regular readers are on pins and needles waiting for final pics of the room, but we have yet to put up the curtains.  I am waiting for warmer weather this weekend to paint the rods & hardwear a new prettier color of green to help break up the pink & purple.  After we get those hung I’ll be sure to take some pictures for posting.

Now, for the rest of my sanity to come back into play I just need to get the office done.  Working from the ottoman in the living room or the kitchen table just isn’t cutting it for me anymore.  Every night things end up in a pile at the end of the dining room table, and bad things like me being late on bills happen.  As soon as the office is done I think I can officially say I will have most of my sanity back, because most of the clutter on the main floor will go up there to be dealt with.  Mainly because I have things like my Pure Romance stuff in a corner in the living room, bills at the end of the dining room table, and things just not where they belong.  All in good time though, as I have a feeling most of that will happen as Brad pushes me to pick colors and paint this weekend.  Sometimes I need a little push, and he’s always there to give it to me when I need it - thanks hunny!

Handy-ish

Current Mood:Alarmed emoticon Alarmed

As you’re probably aware, we’ve been working on the child’s new room. She’s moved in and all, but we’re waiting to take the “final” pictures once the curtains are up (all bought and paid for, just waiting for nice weather to paint the curtain rods).

Tonight, we went to Home Depot to get some more supplies. There’s a door latch issue due to the difference in door knob height between modern doors and door frames from the 1920’s. I got some wood filler to fill in the existing (too low) chiseling. I also picked up a chisel set; something that I didn’t have, but will need for this. But all that is a subject for a later blog post when I fail miserably and have to crawl to the dads for help. :)

What we did pick up tonight was a really excellent light fixture for Clare’s room (pics will come… be patient). It was originally $75, but the guy at the back said he’d knock $10 off for taking the floor model. OK… that’s a bargain considering both Char and Clare liked it and I didn’t hate it. When we got to the front, it rang up for $39 and the teller took the extra $10 off per the guy in the back. So for $29, we got a $75 light fixture! Super bonus.

We got it home and the bolts didn’t exactly line up and were too long. Thankfully, I was able to locate a couple of nuts and “shorten” the bolts up a bit and redo how the existing bracket was mounted in the ceiling. Ceiling electrical boxes from the 20’s are sometimes a trip. At least this one was clean inside (the one in our bedroom was packed full of sawdust when we opened it up).

After getting everything straight and before putting Clare to bed, Char caught me in the hall and said “see… you’re handy.” Uhhh…. hmmm…

I’ll leave it at “Handy-ish”.

Tackle it Tuesday

Current Mood:Tired or Sleepy emoticon Tired or Sleepy

laundrySince we tackled one of our major projects this past weekend (you can read the post on that here) other stuff went by the wayside.  Yesterday I ended up doing some blogging, e-mailing, touch-up painting, started working on the trim in Clare’s new room, and took care of Clare as she stayed home sick with a cold.  She slept in until 10am yesterday, so I knew she wasn’t feeling well.

Even though it sounds like I’ve been tackling a lot the list has only begun, today it’s onto the piled up laundry that has piled up while we did other stufftackle it tuesday this weekend.  Why is it that things seem to never end around here.  As soon as I have every piece of laundry done, there’s always more.  I suppose that’s what happens when you like to be clean and fresh.  While the laundry is doing it’s thing I’ll also be working on the trim again.  I am hoping to have things tidied up in the paint arena by Thursday the latest so I can start hauling furniture and going through the toys.  We’ll see though, knowing my luck next Tuesday I’ll still be tackling it - knock on wood though that I won’t!

To see what others are tackling be sure to head on over to 5 Minutes for Mom, and if you’ve read this what are you tackling today?

Painting a Perfect Picture

Current Mood:Happy emoticon Happy

What a weekend it has been at the Eastowner house!  Believe it or not, I’m finally making more progress on the Wish Lish I started almost 7 months ago.  We had made some progress right 102_2541.JPGaway with it, as I’m sure you read here, and here.  Then with what seemed like an easy project with my number 1; it went all too wrong all too quickly.  We found a leak by the chimney on the outside wall - got that fixed, we found ants in the wall under the drywall - got an exterminator, and then I had to wait for the wall to be repaired - which finally happened last week.  Finally it seemed like I might get something done around here, and with some help I did.  If you don’t know my darling hubby, it’s a rare day that he does manual labor being in the computer business.  I love you darling, but you sure did sigh a lot this weekend.  :)

On Friday I went to Lowe’s to get stuff to prime the walls, and prepare the room.  I had the intention to start early on Saturday priming the room, and then go get the colored paint and some more supplies while it dried - however we ended up having a margaritta night on Friday delaying our start on Saturday.  So, instead we started out our day by going out for some lunch at Ming Ten (our way of getting sushi for cheap, and Clare likes the Chinese buffet while the ability to get an ice cream cone after dinner), stopping at Lowe’s to get some supplies.  Saturday afternoon we put down the plastic to cover the floor - lesson learned, I think I am going to buy the heavier, reusable clothes next time.  The plastic floor coverings while cheap, are a pain to keep our nice hard woods covered, and they tear easily (especially with shoes on); therefore we ruined socks in order to keep the plasic from tearing too much.  Although the paint trays kept getting caught in them and tearing holes anyway.

102_2539.JPGSunday morning we started with the ceiling.  Can I just tell you - whoever came up with the idea to texture ceilings needs to be shot!  We think the ceiling was textured because they had to replace part of the plaste at one point, and decided to texture it to cover up that fact.  Clare picked a lovely shade of pink.  When we first started putting it on, I was like “OH MY - It looks like a piggy bank color.  Man is this bright!”  It did tone down a bit as it dried.  However the only problem is that with textured ceilings and pink paint it took us a bit to be sure we had all of the teenie white spots covered up.  After staring up at the celing for like half an hour looking for spots I starting seeing spots!

 102_2543.JPG

After some lunch we started on the purple walls.  Clare helped of course, and had some fun while doing it.  You can of course seem more pictues of our job in the gallery under Latest - Uncategorized.  The purple took 2 coats, especially in the cut in  areas where we left the yellow.  We are going to give the purple a day or so to set before I start taping off to do the white trim around the top of the room, the floor boards, and of course the windows and doorways.  It was quite a job, more than I thought, and it took us most of Sunday to get it done.  It was a productive way to spend our weekend, and I can’t wait for the end of the week when I can get Clare all moved in.  Our living room has become a bit of a toy pit, so it’ll be nice to have it all in one space.

On a Mission

Current Mood:Jammin’ emoticon Jammin’

determinationI know it’s Friday, and I should be doing something fun but alas I am tackling our dirty - cluttered house.  I know I talk a lot about all of the stuff I do around here, but alas it’s part of my life as a stay-at-home mom.  On today’s docket is some laundry, which is probably about 8 loads worth.  I am also working on cleaning up the down stairs.  Usually I like to start my way upstairs and work my way down, but instead I had to go through the mound of paper at the end of my dining room table to find the bills I promised Brad I’d pay today.  So, downstairs it is.

Even though it’s snowing lightly the sun is attempting to peak it’s way through the clouds which helps motivate me out of my winter slumber & funk.  That, and I’m actually using the computer in the living room to pump some music into the house with our front shades open.  It all helps keep me motivated to complete my mission of gaining control of my currently cluttered house.  I think it will take more than today, but maybe tomorrow I can get Brad to help me out with some of it (wink wink nudge nudge).  Clare is home on a teacher in service day, so she has been doing her best to attempt to help me.  I had her take the lint roller brush and de-dog hair the ottomon, couch, and chairs.  She’s also worked on cleaning up her toy shelf mess, and her extremely cluttered Sponge Bob Table (I think I may have to help her more with that as it’s not quite done to Mommy standards).  Oh, yeah, that’s my OCD talking - I have to slap it away more times than I can count; it’s a major pain in my booty some times.

So, with any luck by Sunday I will be blogging from a clean house, and I’ll feel better about sitting on the couch once again under my blanket hiding from the winteriness outside.  Did I mention how much I dislike winter - oh yeah, I think I have at least a few times.  I can’t wait for Spring!  What are you doing this weekend?  You know where I’ll be!

Feeling a Little Green

Current Mood:I’ve got an Idea! emoticon I’ve got an Idea!

green ideasNo, not green around the gills or anything of the sort.  Green as in Earth friendly.  I have been making some effort to try and change our way of living in the little ways to promote a better life for not only us, but our planet.  I’ve always been a big recycler, and a supporter for doing things that aren’t so wasteful that it ruins our dear little planet.  I remember when I was younger turning the water off when brushing my teeth so we could save water….not necessarily money as we lived in the country and had a well.  I’ve also been known to pick up liter when walking down the street, and doing little things like that.  I was super excited when we moved into our house and had recycling, as when we lived in the apartments they didn’t have anything of the sort and I always felt bad about throwing away things I knew could be recycled…but those dumpsters are oh so addicting (I don’t need this anymore…I’ll just toss it in the dumpster).   I became even more excited when I learned that now in the city of Grand Rapids you can recycle plasics with the numbers 1-7 on them (previously you could ecosonly recycle 1’s & 2’s).

So, this past Spring I began by searching for better laundry detergents and house hold cleaners.  I have fallen in love with Eco’s laundry detergent!  I buy it in large jugs from my favorite warehouse Costco.  You can buy it in smaller jugs at Meijer and health food stores, but it’s not as good of a bargain.  It is made from things that our planet can break down as I am washing my laundry, and it makes my laundry oh so soft!  This stuff not only smells good, but it has a soy softner built right in it so you don’t always need to add softner to your wash.  I also add about 1/2 a cup ofdryer clothes Baking Soda to my wash for that extra boost it needs with stains and a 5 year old!  I have found though living in MI in my drafty, extremely dry, and electic shock prone house that I do need to do softner sheets to help aid in the static in my clothes.  For that I use the Naked Method dryer cloths.  They don’t have a scent of their own, so I can keep smelling my fab Eco’s, and they are also biodegradable and infused with plant-based softeners right into the fabric as it dries. So your clothes feel soft when you pull them out of the warm dryer - I love warm clothes!

I have also taken to buying Method’s all purpose surface cleaner, and window wash among other things.  The all purpose surface cleaner is great, and has a nautural degreaser in it so it works wonders in our kitchen.  It’s also great for our island, as that’s where we tend to do a lot of prep work for our martini nights.  Plain ole’ hot water just doesn’t get the stickiness off like the cleaner does.  The great thing about the cleaner is that I don’t have to scrub like I would had I used water on the counters.  I love the window wash because it’s mint scented.  I almost want to wash the windows just to smell the stuff!  Although I am not as great about washing windows as you’d think - like I said “I almost” want to.  I think Spring may bring a new attitude though.  For those looking to purchase the Method stuff I buy most of mine at Target, as they have just about everything always in stock when I go shopping and it’s a decent price.

Now, onto my most recent attemp to make our household a little bit Greener - drum roll please.  Yesterday while I was out shopping for office supplies after dropping Clare off at school I decided to swing into World Market.  I LOVE this store, and they have some great stuff (even greater when you can find a bargain).  They had a few rows of 50% off stuff, and I figured I’d cloth napkinsdo some quick “looking”….as I went in with only one thing in mind to look for.  Looking always somehow ends up being buying though - I can’t figure out how it happens, but it does.  They always have great place mats  & cloth napkins, but they always cost more than I’m willing to pay for.  I found on the clearance rack some cute greyish cloth napkins with black & white trim for 99 cents each, and they had roughly 12 of them, and then I found 6 yellow and green fringed cloth napkins for the same price.  So for $17.82 I have 18 cloth napkins for us to use instead of paper napkins which are BAD for the environment (due to bleaching and tree usage as well as some other things).  I know, your saying…but the laundry!  I don’t think it’ll be too big of a problem for me as I have enough for about a weeks worth of dinners and some other meals, and very rarely do I go over a week with the laundry.  I don’t think we’ll get away from using paper napkins right away, but at least it’s a start!  I also bought some cute multi-colored placemats to spruce up the dreariness of winter for our dining room table.

So, I am feeling a bit Greener today, and much better about helping out our planet (it’s the little things people).  Of course I still have more stuff that I want to try or do to help us out, and I am always looking to my pal Look Mom Look! for ideas with her Tweenie’s Greenies posts (she is the queen of environmental friendliness in my bloggy world).  I hope that you are helping Earth out too - because we ALL live here, and I want it to be around (as well as some of those cute polar bears) when Clare’s kids, and their kids, and their kids, etc are living here.  Just remember every little bit helps!

Tackle It Tuesday

Current Mood:Violent emoticon Violent

tackle it tuesdayLet’s see….what am I not tackling today!  It’s one of those days in the Eastowner house that just doesn’t have enough hours in the day.  So far this morning I’ve tackled the sleepless Clare by argueing her back to bed at 5:30am, because she wanted to sleep with us.  We have NEVER allowed her to sleep with us in the middle of the night.  If it’s between the hours of 7pm and 7am then she is to be in her room….but somehow she has this idea that she needs to sleep with us.  I feel like I’m back to basics with a toddler sometimes when in reality she’s 5, and knows the rules.  I couldn’t get back to sleep, so I got up at a very unlikable hour of 6am, showered, started laundry - folded 2 loads, took Brad to work, and have already run 2 loads of laundry and it’s only 10am!  Dinner is simmering in the crock pot, and in a few moments we will be out the door to have my car looked at.  I don’t know if you remember last Spring when some crazy, non-paying attention woman ran into my car in a snow storm while I was on my way to take Clare to Preschool.  Well I had to have the rear panel and door redone on my car.  Now suddenly the door isn’t ligning up and even though it’s shut as hard as my body can slam it shut….the car still thinks it’s open.  So I’ll be driving down the road and all of a sudden the dome light will come on.  I’m worried that one day I’m going to forget to put my foot against the door when I push my key fob, and I’ll come out to a dead battery.  I’ll be sure to let you know the outcome of that.  Let’s see…oh yes, so Clare has school, then after school it’s onto pick up Brad, scarf dinner, and go to my Market Training for my new in-home party business.  I’m kind of excited to go, as I think it’ll help me get motivated to get more parties booked.  I’m just hoping that it doesn’t get the feeling of “just one more thing to do today” from me before I have a mental breakdown because something else gets added to my plate unexpectedly.  What are you tackling today?  To see what others are doing head on over to 5 Minutes For Mom and check it out!

Why Can’t I Be More Like Bree?

Current Mood:Violent emoticon Violent

breeI don’t even know if it’s physically and mentally possible to be more like Bree or not.  For those of you that don’t know, she’s the ultra perfect housewife on Depserate Housewives played by Marcia Cross.  She cooks, bakes, cleans, gardens, does crafts, tries to be a good mother, and she does it with perfection.  I don’t think that there are enough hours in the days, weeks, and years for me to be as good as she is.  I can hardly keep up with the laundry, errands, making of dinner, cleaning of the house, and daily life I call mine.  I know it’s all normal, but some days it just gets me down and I feel the urge to find a corner to sulk in.  Why is it that we as women feel the need to conquer all in our lives?  Is it something we picked up from our mothers?  Is it something society projects upon us (as well as the need to be beautiful every moment of the day)?  Is it something instictively inside of us that keeps us ticking?  Or maybe it’s all of the above?  I find myself with the urge to make everything perfect in my home, now if only I could get the inhabitants of our home to stand still and not touch a thing so it could stay perfect.  Somehow I don’t see that happening with a very active 5 year old, and a dog that sheds!  I think I’m just overwhelmed with the dust that’s settled with the holidays, and my non-motivation from all the huplah of the holidays to get it all cleaned, and put back where it belongs.  Anyone else having similar break downs?

Pumpkin ComputerFirst, some housekeeping… It looks like our server woes are resolved.  There were DNS issues that were making Wordpress freak out.  Please let us know if you continue to see issues.  If you bounced e-mail to us last night, please retry.

It’s been a while since I last posted.  Things have been quite busy around these parts and getting away from computing tasks at night have been one of my top priorities.

As for what’s been going on, we got the chimney leak all fixed up (and have reduced the volume of water in the basement to near nothing when it rains), but when I went to get a bearing on the drywall situation, I found a significant infestation of ants in the wall.  Now the “getting a contractor out” starts all over again; this time with an exterminator.

Hopefully we survive tonight without getting our door busted in.  We’re going to our friends’ place tonight for drinks and T&T, so with luck, the retards will stay away.
