GR Press Propaganda DVD Followup

There was an editorial in Sunday’s press about how they made the decision and they interviewed a couple of Muslim folks here in town and presented their arguments against the DVD.  I wrote The Press’ editor a thank you note for writing the article and he wrote me back; short and sweet, but it’s a response.

Thank you for your note. It was not and was never an easy decision\.

Mr Lloyd;

Thank you very much for the response in today’s paper to my (and many
others’) outrage over the inclusion of what I view as a piece of
racist propaganda included with The Press.  I appreciate that you
included the opinions of those that this material directly affects and
I hope that you weigh these thoughts a little more heavily when
reviewing incendiary material like this in the future.

Thank You.

Hello;

Thank you for taking the time to read my complaint.  As a subscriber
of the GR Press and a supporter of local media, I read something this
evening that deeply disturbs me.  Apparently, the GR Press has taken
dollars to forward a DVD of racist propaganda from a group/individuals
known for spreading hatred and misunderstanding of members of our
community.

If this is in fact true, I ask that you review your process for
vetting advertisers as I believe that the people of Grand Rapids are
tolerant and understanding of world cultures which runs contrary to
material such as this.  A good many people of all colors, creeds, and
religions call Grand Rapids home and it is an affront to the community
for the local media to be used to distribute this kind of material.

For your reference, here is a web link that may give you an idea of
what I’m talking about.

If the inclusion of the Grand Rapids Press in this list is in fact
incorrect, I suggest that you contact the Huffington Post and ask for
a correction.  I would also be interested in an official response from
the Press regarding this issue.

Again, thank you very much for your time and attention.

Sometimes it doesn’t pay…

metal_texture_sign_283380_l.jpgI think I’m being taught a life lesson lately, though the ambiguity of it has me confused. The dominant theme, however, seems to be that doing the right thing is the wrong way to go. It’s no wonder so many in this world take the ethical low ground so often and with such zeal. I’ve tried to take the path less beaten numerous times lately and gotten beaten for it. I’m now teetering on the edge of “I can’t blame them.”

Almost, but not quite. Continue reading ‘Sometimes it doesn’t pay…’

Thirty….will it be good or bad?

So, on Monday I turn 30. I’m hoping to be heavily sedated in a massage, so I won’t even notice it! Brad has arranged to whisk me away to Traverse City for 5 days in the luxerous Grand Traverse Bay Resort. It should be lots of fun, as I have been wanting to go up there with him for some time now. The wine tasting alone will be enough to keep us busy! There’s actually quite a bit to do up there, so I think it’ll be a great retreat for the both of us. Brad has arranged for his parents to have Clare while we are away, so I am sure she will have loads of fun with them.

In other news, the holidays are over….thank god! I love the holidays….I just hate traveling during them. It seems as if in this town everyone’s driving IQ goes down about 50 points when the holidays hit and you have to drive anywhere. They drift around the streets as if there’s nobody on them, but themselves. And to top it off last week we had a presidential funeral in town a week later….knock another 25 IQ points off for that day too! It was actually kinda interesting to be in town that day….although because the processional was 1 block from my house, it was a bit tricky driving around that afternoon. People were out, lining the streets, flags, signs (I don’t think the dead body can read thank you signs, but the thought was nice), and signing patriotic songs. It was a little eerie with the Military Police everywhere, it felt as if they were watching you! We didn’t head downtown to wait 8 hours in line to walk past a flag draped casket….come on, I know he’s dead, a past president….but it’s just a flag on top of some wood with a dead guy in it! In my morbid curiosity though, I did take a walk after dropping Clare off at school to go watch the funeral procession drive by. I took a few pictures, it was a little wierd….but in the end I figure that I can say I was there. Come on, how many people in this country can say that they’ve lived in a town and seen a presidential funeral….okay so probably a few as we’ve had a few presidents die, but in the little town of Grand Rapids it was a site. Of course it cost us! $289,000 to be exact….the cost to us tax paying citizens of GR. And to top it off, most of it was overtime! I wish I could make that much in overtime. It was quite a site to see all the black helicopters in the air circling making sure all of our fine citizens didn’t shoot anyone…..would have been funny though to see someone attack Chenney. I think this Spring when things die down though, we may make a trek downtown to the museum http://http://www.ford.utexas.edu/museum/aboutmus.asp to see the burrial spot. Anyway, I think that’s it from me. Time to pack!

Fine Wine and Fine Company

Saturday was probably the best it could have possibly been. Warm, sunny, not a cloud in the sky; it was what most would call “beautiful”. The weather only put an underscore on what would have been a great day had it been cold and overcast. A wonderful time was had by all, except maybe my brother, who is “not much into wine yet” as he puts it. And the beer that Bell’s brought was sub-par (not surprising at all). We were joined by my brother and his wife, from Mishawaka, IN, my in-laws (from the Pt Huron area, MI), the parents Watson (from Niles), and our good friends from Texas Township, Matt and Tracy. Accompanying Mateo and Senorita Tracy was Victor, who it was a pleasure to meet.

So here’s the run-down. The Black Star Farm icewine of 2002 is not as sweet as 2000, but in my opinion is just as good. Char thought the 2000 was better. Mainly, the 2000 was sweeter and more vibrant with grape flavour while the 2002 seems more subdued and has some other nice flavors that come out because the grape isn’t as vibrant.

As for the other wines, we stuck mostly to the dry wines, which relegated most of our purchases to 2002 vintages. This new-found love of the dry and complex that we’ve embarked on will give us another year to wait to enjoy the bounty of the 2003 harvest. Oh, well… just another year of winefest to look forward to. :P

So the final count is exactly three cases between the three wineries; two at St Julian, 1/2 at Black Star and 1/2 at Warner. Too much money, but the wines are all of decent quality and we won’t have to make any trips to Russo’s for wine (other than the Penfold’s Cabernet Shiraz) for some time. As we drink them, check for some feedback here.

In other news, apparently, the top idiot was in Michigan, spending our hard-earned tax dollars to forward his agenda of fear, uncertainty and doubt with the American people. Oh the joy of living in one of “those states”. I don’t have much bandwidth to dedicate to these clowns lately. Most of the “issues” that are being discussed in the mainstream media are a waste of time and energy to even get too worked up about. At this point, my vote has been decided, not because I believe that the person is the best person for the job, but because, given all the variables, I truly believe that anything is better than the status quo. I don’t hold the values (?) of the current administration in any form (I don’t believe that lying to people about the mortal fate of their sons and daughters is “moral” for example) and I plan on putting my vote where my mouth is.

Take it easy ya’ll. Much wine is yet to be enjoyed.

Winefest… and a headache

Today will be our trek to Paw Paw for winefest. I woke up with a nice deabilitating headache this morning. We’ll see how the Advil does, but so far… nothing. Maybe once I get out and start moving around, it won’t be so bad. It’s an hour car ride from here and we’ll be leaving in about an hour.

The roofing came off pretty well, all things considered. There was some speculation that the lowest layer (there were three) of shingles might very well have been the original roof (from the 1920’s). It was basically a layer of hard dirt that had to be removed from the roof with shovels and pitchforks. The tearing off part was NASTY, but the addition of new shingles to the cleaned roof makes it look much better, and so far not leak a drop of water. Many thanks to all who helped out. You all are -very- appreciated.

I’m out.

Oh… yeah… and Happy Bush Profitibility Day! (aka Angry Saudis with Airplanes Day… aka Loony Religious Wingnuts Blew Up Buildings So Let’s Start A War In Iraq Day) Is that offensive? I hope so.

Can someone please explain to me why anyone in their right mind would vote for this moron?

I saw a great sticker the other day. It said “Somewhere in Texas, a village is missing it’s idiot.”
