Rock And Roll Hall of Fame Inductions - 2008

Current Mood:Confused emoticon Confused

rockhall.jpgIt is absolutely ludicrous. Every year, I see the list, complain about those that should have made it before, complain about those who get it and don’t deserve it and watch the RARHOF induction ceremonies anyway. And every year, I’m proven wrong regarding my loathing of some artist I believe doesn’t deserve it. I still think U2 doesn’t, but that’s another rant.

This year, it was two that I love to hate; Madonna and John Mellencamp. I’m going to start with Madonna, which initially drew a puzzled “WTF?!” from a not-so-isolated corner of my mind. How is it possible for someone who really did nothing other than create a bunch of “stylish for the times” throwaway pop make it into the Hall? My dad put it best; basically to paraphrase, she’s solely responsible for proving that a strong-willed businesswoman could kick ass and take names in the music industry. And that it didn’t even take much raw talent to do so.

Latest Obsession

Current Mood:Martini Mood emoticon Martini Mood

Project RunwayI’ve always secretly loved fashion, even though I’m not terribly fashionable myself.  I blame growing up in the country - sorry Mom & Dad.  My other thing is that even though I love fashion and craftiness - I don’t have a single crafty bone in my body.  I can try, excedingly hard to make something that I saw in a cute magazine article, and yet it never comes out anything like it.  So, alas I live my secret obsession for fashion and craftiness by watching television shows like Bravo’s Project Runway.  Now even though I’m not one for reality television, I love shows like this that challenge people to make their craft better.  I was a little saddened to see Chris leave the show when I watched my DVRed episode last night.  He was so funny, and edgey - and Rami was just a little too cocky for my taste.  My favorite though has to be Christian though, he’s so FIERCE!  So, do any of you have any new obsessions to share in the tv world?  I can’t wait for the writers to actually have their work come out after being on strike for so long.  Then again, I’m way too much of a TV junkie than I need to be.

Flash Back

Current Mood:Tired or Sleepy emoticon Tired or Sleepy

twin peaksDo you remember back in 1990 there was an awesome tv series called “Twin Peaks”.  Unfortunately I didn’t get to stay up late and watch most of the series when it was first on back in the day, but the opening music has always stuck with me.  Last year before we switched dish providers I started rewatching the series on their Monster Movies channel…I was instantly sucked in again.  Then I was bummed because our new dish provider didn’t have anything like it.  To top it off they didn’t have season one on DVD yet, so I couldn’t do the Netflix thing I normally do.  Brad came to my rescue…he went online and found the entire series, including the pilot (which wasn’t included in the Season 1) and downloaded it for us to watch.  We’ve been watching the series on and off for about a year now, and every time we watch it the mysteries of the show always get me.  There are some good laughs too…I never realized David Duchovney was in that show.  However he is, and he cross dresses as a woman…it still makes me giggle!  For those of you that are Desperate Housewives fans like I am, you can see a young Kyle MacLachlan (Orson Hodge on Desperate Housewives) in action.  We’ve made it most of the way through season 2 now, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.  No spoilers if you remember!

Adventures in DVR

Robert PlantJools Holland again on this installment of Adventures in DVR. This time around, Athlete, Robert Plant, The Go Team, The Fall, Mose Alison, and Lhasa.

AthleteAthlete is a British Eels. They aren’t terrible if you like electric, rambling pop music. I’d definitely listen to them. The second track is a little too Coldplay and I find myself fast forwarding. Their third outing is pretty groovy. I like it. Again with the Eels feel progressing into a more straight-ahead poppy thing. Like the second track, there’s strings, but they add some depth to the tune, rather than carry it like the second tune.

Robert Plant is seriously impressive and groovin’. He could actually be considered “not washed up”, unlike many of his contemporaries. I might actually consider purchasing his latest. The interview with him is pretty cool… he basically says that his stuff before wasn’t as good because he felt he didn’t have anything to say until this record. Has some young blood in his band and the dude that looks like the drummer from Blue Oyster Cult. Second track is Delta Blues Rock-n-Roll ala good old fashioned Zep. He’s not gone all Vegas-slow-down. The band’s name is Strange Sensation and they are at the top of their game.

The Go TeamThe Go Team : Any song that starts out with yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah needs a little work. They are a cheap funk/pop rip-off that is trying to hard to re-create that Salt-n-Pepa 70’s groove rip-off feeling; except without the “deep lyrics”. They take themselves far too seriously considering the music is basically throw-away junk with almost no soul; a cheap plastic knock-off. The chick needs vocal lessons, badly. I say skip this one. Their second outing does not change my mind. It makes me sad to think that these people are getting exposure when I’ve literally heard hundreds of better bands in college towns playing small clubs in the middle of the week.

The Fall : not sure what’s going on here. Drunk on the mic is my guess. Two chords. If it’s supposed to be beat poetry, I’d like to know so I know how to listen to it. There’s some talent here, you can tell, but what they are getting at needs a little cohesion (and maybe they need to ditch the drunk on the mic). From a little more research, apparently these guys are/were big with the crowd of folks who believe that if you don’t like obtuse outsider music, you just aren’t a true music fan. It’s kind of a joke, really, but I guess people without an ounce of talent need to make money too. Kudos to them!

Mose Allison : dude kind of needs to hang it up, but that’s always kind of been true. Folky playing the torch/jazz anti-war blues anthem is a little jarring. Everything seems a little out of place, but the guy -can- play piano. He needs the long hippy beard and floppy felt hat. He just doesn’t look crazy enough… :)

Lhasa : some pseudo-french gypsy music sung in Spanish. There are lots better examples of this style of music from Europe. Check out Vaya Con Dios for the real deal. This is ok, but lacks a certain heart and edge. I’ll bet these folks have played more art gallery openings than real gigs (not that I’ve ever done that…).

I love Jools for the opportunity to see a lot of great live music. Occasionally I see something new that I really really like. Tonight was no exception. If someone would have told me I’d dig Robert Plant, I’d have called them crazy, but there it is. He was good; very good.

Scissor Sisters

So it’s another night and another episode of good ol’ Jools Holland. I’m not sure what it is, but he always seems to have at least one of my favourite bands on. Tonight he had two.

And before you say anything, yes, yes… I know. It’s on the DVR. It wasn’t TONIGHT. Well… I make my own programming damnit. I have no idea WHAT NIGHT they were on and really… it doesn’t matter. Does it? Does it? What’s LIVE? I’m too old for LIVE anymore anyway.

So we’ll start out with tonight’s losers and then move on to the good stuff. I’m not quite sure what happened to this band, but the whole lot of them must have been dropped on their heads as babies. Holy crap is Mr. Hudson and The Library one of the worst bands I’ve ever seen make it far enough to be on late night TV.

They are bad… and I mean REALLY bad. Every member is a cheap knock-off of some MTV Vidiot character from the 80’s and completely full of themselves to boot. The “lead singer” can’t sing, pretends to play guitar and is so cheeky, I couldn’t help but laugh. Three out of four members were wearing sweater vests with “popped” collars. They were absolutely aweful to look at it.

Then there was the “music” that Mr Hudson was trying to play. I think they were all big fans of UB40, but without ANY of the talent. I’m not quite sure what to call something that sounded like British hip-hop melded with purely electronic throw-away music from the 80’s, but I’ll just call it “bad”. Never have I seen something this aweful on Jools.

Next on the losers list is Scott Matthews. His stuff made me sleep, which seems to be what was happening to the poor sheet-reading cello player that was very obviously not versed in Mr Matthews attempt at sounding like that other Matthews dude, except without that really talented guy who plays violin. Maybe he was just having an off night. He seems a lot better in his YouTube Videos. Or maybe he was trying not to play in the same style as blues man Eric Bibb, who was on the same night.

Eric Bibb was very cool. The only downside was that Jools sat in, trying to play some honky-tonk piano under Bibb’s Mississippi Delta Blues guitar. It felt wrong, and you could tell that Bibb was just trying to get done to be done with it. Bibb’s a talented guy… Jools just can’t hang with the very emotional, almost out-of-tune delta blues.

One last honorable mention and then on to the winners. Tony Bennett did his Vegas lounge lizard thing to standing ovation. Those crazy Brits! It’s a little surreal and disturbing to see Bennett, as old as he is, trying to do that rat pack sexy thing. “Not right” comes to mind, but that kind of goes for the whole scene anyway. At least some writer at SNL probably got an idea for a new skit that night.

The best performers were by far The Scissor Sisters, which many of you know both Char and I like a lot. They are as funky-cool live as they are in the studio and put on one hell of a performance. Here’s a little taste of their live act on YouTube. There aren’t enough good words for these folks. The only way to truly experience their depth of talent is to listen to one of their albums, which are widely varied and extremely fun beginning to end. Look for a “Back Catalog Album Review” on one of their albums soon.

The other absolutely delightful performance came from The Good, The Bad, & The Queen; a band made up of folks from Blur, Fela Kuti’s band, and The Clash. These folks are absolutely amazing musicians and performed a couple of dark rambling tunes that send shivers everywhere. One of their videos can be found here. They are sort of a very British version of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

Last but certainly not least were The Hours, a powerpop band from the UK. I hadn’t heard too much of these folks until now. They are certainly interesting and make music for musicians that other people happen to like. They are definitely talented song writers and arrangers who breaks from the 1-2-1-2-3-2-2 formula of pop song writing. The arrangement of the song they performed was enough alone to make me take listen. If you like the latest crop of UK indie rock to hit the scene (Snow Patrol and the like), you will like these guys. They are definitely getting added to my list.

Adventures in DVR

Current Mood:Happy emoticon Happy

As many of you know, I’m not much of a TV person.  We recently changed TV providers due to the purchase of an LCD HD set for the livingroom.  I wanted some HD content to play on my HD TV.  This has created something in me that I never thought would happen; there are things on TV I like.

We’ve taken to watching Later… with Jools Holland, a music show from the Beeb that is syndicated to a channel called Rave in our HD package.  He typically has five or six artists that are showcased on each show and they are all powerhouses of their own right.  Tonight it is a re-run with The Automatic, Dixie Chicks, Dresden Dolls, Gogol Bordello, Paulo Nutini and Fraterellis.

The Dixie Chicks are a band I could take or leave, but they are at least generally pleasant on the ears.  Their new stuff seems pretty good.  A lot less country than they used to be. Perhaps they need a little more of a listen.  And they railed the looser currently running our country into the ground.  You can’t fault them for that (or maybe you can, but I can’t).

The Automatic was quite excellent.  It’s always really cool to hear bands perform live that you’ve only heard recorded.  Some bands (I’m pointing at you “Muse”) are so much better live that you have a hard time bringing yourself to buy the album.

Gogol Bordello, who play “gypsy punk”, which by the way is completely accurate, are quite possibly the most entertaining band I’ve seen in years.  Not only are they talented composers and musicians, their act is completely over the top (and include ACCORDIONS and  distorted guitar).  Their performance was nearly flawless and a whole lot of fun.  GB has a new album out, by the way, which comes highly recommended if you’re into bands like Dropkick Murphy and Flogging Molly (though Gogol Bordello is a lot less serious than those guys).

Fraterellis are up next.  They aren’t bad, but represent the Britpop/rubbishbinpunk style that will be irrelevant in a couple of years.  If you’re looking for garage rock that’ll send shivers down your spine skip these guys and buy Black Keys or Raconteurs.  Even the dreaded White Stripes latest outing is something more to write home about.

Up next is one of my absolute favourite bands in existence.  The Dresden Dolls are quite possibly the best thing you’ll ever hear that are simply piano/drums/vocals.  It’s punk/torch, but so good that what would otherwise seem cliche makes you stop dead in your tracks and listen.  I can’t imagine how anyone really interested in music can’t at least appreciate the artistry of these two.

Now it’s back to ignoring the Dixie Chicks.  I have no problem with them personally, but rock-crossover country chick bands just aren’t my cup of tea.  Maybe under the right substances…

I think if I don’t already own The Automatic, it may go on my list.  They require more listening.  It’s bordering on throw-away heavy pop/punk/neonew-wave, but it seems interesting nonetheless.   And besides, I’m always down with what the youth are listening to (even if it does seem meth-fueled), except dirty south (or ATL as they call it nowdays) hip-hop that is as vapid as it is misogynistic.

Next on the Jools docket is a dude that has one of the prettier voices in pop right now; Paulo Nutini.  This dude is young.  I mean REALLY young. He looks like he just got a driver’s license last year, but he’s a skinny white dude that can probably cover Bob Marley note-for-note.  Hopefully his pipes don’t age badly.  This is a guy everyone should watch.  He could easily become one of the great male pop vocalists of all time if he keeps it up.

The rest of the show will now repeat the bands one by one, as is the Formulae Jools.

Thanks for tuning in and see ya next time.   Hopefully, this will become a semi-regular thing, perhaps with discussions on other items found randomly in our DVR.
