As many of you know, the eastowners’ is a music household. The original relationship was created as a result of both of us being musicians and Clare has grown up around playing and listening to a wide variety of music. We keep a wide variety of instruments around and the eastowners CD collection numbers in the thousands. It is rare for the house to be silent.
Way back in 199-something, bc was in a band called Dead End Roads along with a rag-tag group of childhood friends that included Rob Gross, Matt Carpenter, and Dan Kesterke. They had just put the final touches on their demo, called “Coital Drive”. Presented here is the stripped down remix done in 2001 to create a more organic mood to the music. The band had been together for several years prior to this, but many of the recordings are either lost or buried on cassette tape.

After Dead End Roads, bc floated for a number of years through literally a dozen or so other bands, including lesser well-known funk, groove, latin, and gypsy bands. In almost all he found himself playing trumpet and occasionally singing, maybe a rough songwriting session or three.
There are literally hundreds of stories surrounding all those various bands, the gigs they had, the hotel rooms they talked about trashing, but there is only so much room online for selfish meandering about the past, so I save you… for now.
Back to the music. Once bc and charma got together, a band was formed. Originally called “Saturated Soul” (Saturated Phat was already taken), the band was made up of a trumpet player, a sax player, a flute player, and a bassist. They practiced relentlessly… without a drummer.
Early incarnations of the band were also seen with a street poet.
The story of the drummer is a long and interesting story. Suffice it to say, that they ended up with one after going through a dozen or so and all was well. They picked up a super excellent uber axeman as well as one of the best rhythm keys players anyone had ever worked with. With the addition of bc’s bro, DJ NoSkills, on the t-bone, as well as a musician-madman-extrodinaire (and friend of the bassist) on everything from spoons to bass trombone, the band was unstoppable… except if they were hungry.
With the minnow leaving the for the bluegrass state and the arrival of Clare, the adventures with the freaky cat were sadly over. The eastowners have been trying for years to hold a Lake Michigan BBQ for everyone and failing. Perhaps one day there will be a reunion.
Presented here is the original demo, with an odd mix of members (and an electronic music rendering of one of our tunes). There’s a lot more music to get presented here and artwork too. Stay tuned…
